Literature & art

In addition to history, political essay or memoirs, Ruedo ibérico’s editorial programme gave great attention to politically committed literature and art. The catalogue encompasses poetic works by Gabriel Celaya, Blas de Otero, Salvador Espriu, Ángel González, as well as anonymous romances and anthologies in homage to Antonio Machado, Cuba and also others of an erotic nature. Cuadernos de Ruedo ibérico interspersed poems by recognised poets alongside brilliant young writers. In prose, Ruedo ibérico lent notoriety to literary essays by Goytisolo and novels by López Salinas and Rincón.

Painters and cartoonists also joined in the cultural struggle that the publishing house had embarked upon. Saura, Tàpies and Millares, at the time representing the avant-garde of visual arts, illustrated several issue covers and books. The magazine welcomed a line-up of Spanish and foreign artists. Neither did Ruedo ibérico dismiss the political cartoon as a corrosive visual element. Bartoli and Vázquez de Sola’s bitter yet humorous works are in line with this idea. Art and literature thus advanced hand in hand with academic and political opposition.
