Antonio Espina and Francisco Ayala wrote essays about the cinema that complemented Buñuel’s interest on making films. Buñuel wrote an article, published in La Gaceta Literaria, about his fascinating process of learning about film as a form of poetry.

Salvador Dalí, on the other hand, described the cinema as anti- art: «The non-artistic film-maker shoots a brick wall and captures unexpected and authentic cubist birds. The artistic film-maker shoots fake cubist birds and captures a useless brick».

One of the favorite topics of discussion was the difference between Charles Chaplin, representing the sentimental feelings in film, and Buster Keaton, the imperturbable genius. There were also debates about the possibilities opened by the sound films, the «talkies». La Gaceta Literaria dedicated a special issue to «El séptimo arte. Cinema, 1928».
