ARQUITECTURAL REMODELING

The comprehensive remodeling of the architectural complex of the Residencia was a priority among the various tasks undertaken since 1986, due to the deteriorating state of its buildings and the inadequacy of its facilities.

Architects Estanislao Pérez Pita and Jerónimo Junquera developed the project of the four pavilions that now form the Residencia de Estudiantes. They took into account the functions that each pavilion should fulfill while respecting the original buildings and recovering their identity. The process began in 1987 with an assignment by the CSIC, a draft of the “Plan director de la Colina de los Chopos” (master plan for the Poplar Hill. Work began in 1991 with the Transatlantic Pavilion, the center for the cultural activities of the Residencia and the headquarters of the Federico García Lorca Foundation. The remodeling was finished in 2001 with the reopening of the Central and Twin Pavilions, which maintain their original functions as the auditorium, dining room, and bedrooms for the residents.

The remodeling of this significant architectural heritage site has included the furnishing and landscaping of the spaces and gardens around the pavilions. The historical Jardín de las Adelfas, planted by Juan Ramón Jiménez, the Paseo de las Acacias, and the Canalillo have been restored, returning to the garden the meaning and symbolism that it originally had.
