THE POPLARS HILL

View of the pavilions of the Residencia de Estudiantes. Drawing by Fernando Marco. Biblioteca Nacional de España, Madrid.

The urban space chosen for the final location favored the activity of the Residencia de Estudiantes that had begun in a rented small house on Fortuny St. In 1915, the Residencia was settled on the so-called “racetrack hills”, in five pavilions of brick Moorish style designed by architects Antonio Flórez and Francisco Javier Luque. In 1933, Carlos Arniches and Martin Domínguez constructed a building containing the auditorium and the library.

Juan Ramón Jiménez, who worked closely on the project from its inception, christened the new location as “The Poplars Hill”.
