The Junta para Ampliación de Estudios (JAE) developed a comprehensive plan for the renovation of education and the scientific system. The scholarships program abroad and the work of its centers were aimed at establishing a smooth exchange of knowledge with leading research teams in the world in order to promote the development of science and to improve the quality of university and school teaching staff in Spain.
The Residencia de Estudiantes and the Instituto-Escuela experimented with new forms of learning. In the case of the former, its effectiveness would be based on the contact with prominent scientists and intellectuals, a tutorial system similar to British colleges, and the provision of better material conditions for students.
The Residencia, in accordance with the principles of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, encouraged an active and comprehensive education based on the dialogue among students, tutors, and artists and intellectuals who frequented it, as well as the contact with nature, and learning other languages. On the other hand, it supported a continuing education throughout the full educational period, since the Residencia had a group of girls and a group of young ladies (both directed by the educator María de Maeztu), a group of boys (directed by Luis Álvarez de Santullano), and a university group (directed by the headmaster of the Residencia, Alberto Jiménez Fraud).
