The tutorial system was essential to the project of the Residencia. Prestigious professionals, the tutors and dons, taught students personally, or through courses, lectures, and practicas at the laboratories. Miguel de Unamuno, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Ramón Menéndez Pidal, Manuel de Falla, Manuel García Morente, Blas Cabrera, Eugenio d’Ors, Eduardo Martínez Torner, and Federico de Onís lived or frequently visited the Residencia. Ángel Llorca, Ricardo de Orueta, and José Moreno Villa, as well as the directors of the laboratories, lived permanently as residents for many years and were especially influential here.
José Ortega y Gasset maintained a close relationship with the Residencia. He felt attracted tothe ideals of the institution and contributed to the project and its board from its beginnings. According to Jiménez Fraud, Ortega “came daily” to the Residencia, and became an intellectual point of reference, gave numerous lectures and published his first book, Meditaciones del Quijote.
