Catalog Viaje a las islas invitadas. Manuel Altolaguirre (1905 - 1959)
This book, companion to the exhibition at the Residencia de Estudiantes, purports to be the most comprehensive work on Altolaguirre as publisher, playwright, film maker and poet.  With testimonies from his contemporaries and poets of later generations, this volume presents a thorough biography, essays on his intellectual path, his relationship with theatre, film, and the visual arts, and his work as printer and publisher.

This monograph is the result of the Residencia commitment to Altolaguirre, not only as custodian of his archives, but also because he was a key figure in the process of recovering the Residencia’s historical memory, given his friendship with Federico García Lorca, Emilio Prados and Luis Cernuda, poets who lived in the Residencia. Altolaguirre was a binding force for the Generación del 27, and his periodicals and publishing projects deserved to be remembered.

Collected Letters. Manuel Altolaguirre
Epistolario 1925-1959

Manuel Altolaguirre belonged to a brilliant generation of Spanish poets. He was born in Malaga, in June 1905 and died in Burgos, July 1959. A poet and a printer, he lived in a remarkable cultural period, with friends such as Federico García Lorca, Emilio Prados, Rafael Alberti, Vicente Aleixandre, Luis Cernuda, Pedro Salinas, Gerardo Diego, and Jorge Guillén.

He was an outstanding man who tackled several creative fields.
While he is mostly remembered as a poet and printer, it would be unfair to overlook his work as literary critic, biographer of Garcilaso de la Vega, playwright, journalist, scriptwriter, and filmmaker.

This book includes letters already published, as well as some unpublished with new correspondents, among them Jorge Guillén, who maintained a constant correspondence with Altolaguirre throughout the 1930s. Juan Guerrero Ruiz, Guillén’s co-editor of the periodical Verso y Prosa (1927-1928), was one of the first publishers promoting Altolaguirre’s work.

The bookseller León Sánchez Cuesta provided books to Altolaguirre and wrote to him frequently to keep him informed about the editions of Altolaguirre’s publications, which he distributed through his bookstore. Manuel de Falla showed a father-like interest toward his young admirer’s activities.

British-Colombian hispanista and poet, Edward Sarmiento worked closely with Altolaguirre and his wife, Concha Méndez in the London presentation of the periodical “1616”, in the fall of 1934. Professor John B. Trend supported the initiative from Cambridge University.

Julio Mathías y Lacarra, a distant relative, became the agent for his film projects in 1958. Camilo José Cela tried to include him in his ill-fated Antologia de la generación del 27. María Luisa Gómez Mena shared with Altolaguirre the last 12 years of his life.

The correspondence also includes letters from Rafael Alberti, Vicente Aleixandre, Juan de la Cabada, Paul Éluard, Bernabé, Fernández-Canivell, José Herrera Petere, and María Zambrano. Most of these letters are from the post-Civil War period. Unfortunately, the bombing of Altolaguirre’s house in Madrid during the war destroyed all previous correspondence.

The 120 letters from friends and colleagues significantly enrich this volume, providing a better understanding of Altolaguirre’s ever-changing environment. This collection does not intend to include the poet’s complete correspondence but is a step in the right direction and will shed light on many aspects of his life and work.
