Critical Freedom

Ruedo ibérico set out to present a global, detailed and critical analysis of the Spain of its day. Spain Today (España hoy, 1963) and Pillaged Extremadura (Extremadura saqueada, 1978) were the first and last volumes of a series of texts that included amongst others Spanish Horizon (Horizonte español, 1966 & 1972) as well as Galicia today (Galicia Hoy). These collectively written bulky works demonstrate, in plain contradiction of official propaganda, the existence of a society that was torn apart politically, economically and culturally.

“We must make it clear –reads the introduction to Spain Today (España hoy)- that we do not intend to carry out an ‘impartial’ or dispassionate work. […] We have not been mere witnesses to events but men who have taken a stand before them. […] But we have always rigorously tried to allow the readers to formulate their own opinions in light of varied sources of information, that present different nuances sometimes radically in opposition.

Other titles that documented the hidden realities of the Nation dealt with the press, the Opus Dei, the army, the prison system, strikes, court martials, the urban guerrilla and particularly repression in the Basque Country.
