In 1931, there were practically no public libraries in Spain and rural schools did not have children’s books. The task undertaken by the Patronato, with María Moliner and Juan Vicens as key players, was the largest reading campaign ever: Libraries for adults and children were delivered to villages which could not be reached by car and where there was no electricity. The Patronato made books available in the schools, and sent out other books only when those applying for them could guarantee that they would serve their purpose.
