The main goal of the Missions project, based on the values of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, was to dignify the profession of teacher. The Patronato organized short courses for teachers, in which the exchange of experiences, rather than lectures, was the guiding principle. The aim was to reinforce the confidence of the teachers in their own efforts and imagination. These courses were often complemented by exhibitions of schoolwork – a model proposed for rural schools – and the use of natural and artistic environments for educational purposes. The goal of the Missions of the Arts was to “to teach teachers to read the stone.”
Radio was another resource used by the Patronato to broaden its cultural activities. However, this mission presented enormous technical difficulties, since in the 1930s much of the rural population still lacked electricity and the power wattage was very low.
