Catalog

Tientos y Silencios. Jesus Bal y Gay (1905-1993)

Catalog of the exhibit, organized by the Sociedad  Estatal de Commemoraciones  Culturales, the University of Santiago de Compostela, and the Residencia de Estudiantes, with  support from the Xunta de Galicia, and  institutions of Lugo Cultural. This volume purports to become the reference book on Jesús Bal y Gay’s intellectual path and musical career.

The catalog includes most of the works, documents, and photographs featured in the exhibit, many unpublished until now. Carlos Villanueva, curator of the exhibit, writes a detailed biography. Javier Arias Bal has written the annotated catalog of Bal y Gay’s musical archives. Other essays deal with his versatile activities: essayist, intellectual, musicologist and composer, as well as with his close relationship with members of the intelligentsia and artists who had a decisive influence upon him.

The volume also includes an appendix with samples of his press writings in Spain and Mexico, as well as transcripts of unpublished, valuable works from his private archives, now kept at the Residencia de Estudiantes.
