This is the catalog of the exhibit at the Residencia in the International Year of Physics. It includes essays on Albert Einstein’s visit to Spain in 1923, his contributions to Physics and their reception in this country.
José Manuel Sánchez Ron, director of the project and curator of the exhibition, deals with Einstein’s human and scientific characteristics, and with the propagation of his theories in Spain. He also writes another essay on the efforts from institutions and professors to convince Einstein to accept a chair at Madrid’s Universidad Central. Antoní Rosell Roca, Ana Romero and Luis J. Boya narrate his travels to Barcelona, Madrid and Zaragoza, and the environment and scientific level of those universities in the 1920’s. Pedro García Barreno discusses Einstein’s relationship with the Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas Físicas y Naturales during his visit, and Antonio Moreno deals with the propagation of the theory of relativity in Spain. There is an appendix with the facsimile leaflet of the speeches pronounced at the Academia de Ciencias that granted Einstein an honorary degree (Madrid, Talleres Poligráficos, 1923)
The impact of Einstein’s visit is well documented by numerous photographs, comic stripes, reviews and newspaper articles.
