Gonzalo Menéndez-Pidal (Madrid, 1911) studied at the Instituto Escuela, the University of Madrid and the Film und Bildamt der Stadt Berlin. He is a member of the Academia de la Historia and the Deutsches Archaelogisches Institut.
He has published numerous books: Atlas histórico español (1941), Imágen del mundo hacia 1570 (1944), La España del siglo XIII en imágenes (1986), and La España del siglo XIX vista por sus contemporáneos (1988), among others. He made a feature film, Los hijos del 68, and audio-visual recordings of Pío Baroja, Rafael Alberti, Julio Caro and Dámaso Alonso, among others.
Gonzalo Menéndez-Pidal has developed throughout his life an ability to store, either in words or images, moments that would otherwise be lost. In Papeles Perdidos , Menéndez- Pidal narrates in first person the history of a century, the events and the characters he met. The book is not just a collection of memories, but, above all, is a way to discover the author, a fascinating character himself.
