Historian and biologist Santos Casado’s first research project dealt with the history of ecology in Spain from the late 19th century until 1936. In this contribution to the history of science in Spain, he addressed the relations between society and nature, providing new data and interpretations about the origins of environmental awareness.
He pointed out the decisive role played by the Institución Libre de Enseñanza in this process and wrote about the new attitudes towards the environment arising around the turn of the century, such as the first conservation initiatives and the pioneers of hiking. The author conducted research for this book with a grant from the Residencia de Estudiantes in 1990.
