The Residencia de Estudiantes has always welcome and promoted Catalan culture.
In the early 20th century, the modernization of education, science and culture led to several initiatives in the cultural circles of Madrid and Barcelona, with Pere Coromines, Joan Pijoan, Eugeni d 'Ors and Francesc Cambo as their link. The Junta para Ampliación de Estudios in Madrid and the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, both founded in 1907, developed similar projects. For instance, the creation of the Institut-Escola de la Generalitat (1931), and the foundation the Residència d’Estudiants de Catalunya (1921). Since its inauguration, the Residencia caught the attention of prominent Catalan intellectuals, who lectured in its auditorium or published in its publishing house.
Pere Bosch Gimpera, Josep Sureda, Ferran Valls Taberner, Luis Santaló,and Salvador Dalí were residents; Pere Coromines, Eugeni d'Ors o Gaziel stayed there frequently; all participated in its activities, along with Francesc Cambó, Samuel Gili Gaya, Enrique Moles, August Pi i Sunyer, Josep Pijoan, Josep Ricart Matas, Josep Subirá, Josep Maria Castellarnau, and Ramón Turró i Darder. Coromines, D' Ors, Cambó, Turró, and Castellarnau published in the Residencia’s publishing house.
The Residencia has continued with this tradition today. Most Catalan researchers come to the Residencia when in Madrid and it maintains close ties with Catalan institutions that have resulted in projects, exhibitions, and publications.
